Cosmetic Ear Surgery
Cosmetic Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
Surgery to correct misshapen or protruding ears has been around for many decades. It is very sad to see a small innocent child made fun of, mocked or ridiculed. This leads to damaged self-esteem with personality defects.
Of late there has been the misguided approach that any corrective surgery is bad and the child should grow up “naturally”. This can be very damaging to healthy development. I am seeing more adults coming in now for corrective surgery. They are all saying they wished their parents had it done when they were little and saved them years of suffering.
We usually recommend otoplasty to children before they start school to avoid psychological abuse.
How is Otoplasty performed?
So many adults request this mistakenly because they want to compensate for years of suffering! The incision is made behind the ear so no scar will show. Excess or misshaped cartilage is removed and a natural appearance is created.
Recovery is aided by antibiotics and pain pills and normal activity allowed in a few weeks.
Complications such as bleeding or infection are rare and minor “touch ups” can be done if needed.
This is one of the most gratifying procedures both for me and the patient.
