Male Breast Reduction

This is known as Gynecomastia from the Greek meaning “female like breast.” There are two types: true Gynecomastia and False or Psuedo-Gynecomastia.

True Gynecomastia occurs in young boys during or right after puberty due to a slight inbalance between the male hormone testosterone and the female hormone estrogen.  This usually resolves itself by age 18 but can persist and increase in size with age and weight gain.  At this stage the only treatment is Surgical.  If this occurs in pre-pubertal boys, say below the age of ten it should be checked by a pediatric endocrimologist.  The surgery consists of removal of the offending tissue, usually thru an incision at the junction of the nipple and the skin and liposuction sculpting of the chest to obtain a normal male appearance.  Little visible scarring results from this surgery.

Psuedo or false gynecomastia is a result of excess fat in the breast area due to obesity and loss of skin and muscle tone due to age.  Diet and exercise help but Liposuction gives an immediate improvement.

Surgery is done in our state of the art facility under light general anesthesia.  This means you are asleep but breathing on your own.  You are not paralyzed with a tube in your windpipe and put on a breathing machine.  It is a very safe form of anesthesia.
